About Jessie Kular, founder and head Nutritionist of NutriSense

Jessie’s passion for food and nutrition started some 40 years ago in Punjab, India where she was born and raised.  Her upbringing in a rural community meant that natural foods and an active lifestyle were always an important part of her life.  She obtained her Masters degree in Foods and Nutrition from the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU)* in Ludhiana, India.  Jessie worked for several years as a lecturer on nutrition in the faculty of Home Economics at Haryana Agricultural University in Hissar, India, before immigrating to Canada in 1974. She then updated her knowledge of the field according to Canadian standards at the Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and even worked on a project for Agriculture Canada in 1979.

Residing in Brampton, Ontario for the last 25 years, Jessie has been working with her physician husband in their family and sports medicine clinic. It is here that she became aware of the severity of health problems affecting the South Asian community in Canada. She was deeply concerned and decided to make it her mission to help solve this problem.

She founded NutriSense in 2004 with the mission to promote healthy lifestyles by educating, motivating and providing tools to easily make changes.

Inspired by her world travels (Canada, India, Egypt, Italy, France, Greece, Australia, Hawaii and South Africa to name a few) and by her love of serving wholesome and balanced meals to her family, Jessie has created many creative and tasty recipes over the years and is currently compiling them into a cookbook.  Many of her recipes pay particular attention to the needs of people suffering from metabolic syndrome or diabetes.

Jessie volunteers her time with various organizations including the region of Peel where she works as a Community Food Advisor, giving presentations and lectures to spread knowledge and information to the community.  She has also been invited to speak at several medical conferences on the importance and benefits of healthy food practices.

When she’s not learning or teaching about nutrition, Jessie loves to spend time with her husband, 4 children and now 3 grandchildren in Toronto.

Through her work with NutriSense, Jessie has learnt that Canada is a wonderful mosaic of different cultures where, through food, we have the opportunity to understand each other, benefit nutritionally and enjoy a variety of flavours. She believes that the key is to take small steps and changes towards healthier lifestyles. She is confident that we have the power to reduce the incidence of disease and also the financial burden on our precious health care system by making these changes.

The following thoughts give Jessie the encouragement, commitment and dedication for this cause.

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."

“We are now at a point where we must educate our children in what no one knew yesterday, and prepare our schools for what no one knows yet.”

--Margaret Mead, anthropologist

*PAU curriculum, in all the faculties, was established in collaboration with Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA, and is recognized at par with US degrees in the same field.
